How Useful are Antimicrobial Coatings against COVID-19?

COVID-19 came as a massive threat to our health and safety. Antimicrobial coatings have since gained popularity for its protective effects against viruses, bacteria and mould.

What is an Antimicrobial Coating?

There are multiple functionalities of the self disinfecting coating. Reports have suggested that it can reduce the total number of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Antimicrobial coatings are now used in a variety of settings, including hospitals, offices and airports.

The studies have also found antimicrobial coatings are successful in producing long-term efficiency in hospitals. It has been found that they can reduce the number of bacteria more than 15 weeks after the application. The various scientific researchers have suggested its effectiveness against a wide range of pathogenic bacteria. The study also reflects its efficiency in different hard surfaces such as bed rails, walls, tray tables, beds and others.

The Benefits of Antimicrobial Coatings

As a result of its multiple functionalities, antimicrobial coatings are being used to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The Speco® coating is eco-friendly and acts as a guard against viruses, bacteria and mould. Most importantly, Speco® coatings are different from other coatings on the market in that they are non-cytotoxic, whereas others use cytotoxic ingredients with hazardous health effects in the long-term.

Antimicrobial coatings remain effective for months before any form of re-application. The layer comprises a modified quaternary ammonium compound, which is recommended effective against COVID-19 by infection control experts.

How does it work?

Studies have suggested that antimicrobial coatings are practical in two ways. Firstly, it comprises needle-like structures which can rupture the outer membrane of viruses, bacteria and fungi. This thereby reduces the ability of the viruses to infect surfaces and host cells.

Secondly, the bonding agent of the coating helps it to adhere tightly to the surfaces. Thus, despite repeated exposure to alcohol, acid, alkali or high temperatures, Speco® remains durable and effective on the surface it is applied to. This adhering function is also safe for human skin, and the coating is shedded after 24 hours due to natural skin shedding processes.

With the use of exclusively non-cytotoxic ingredients, Speco® is safe for long-term exposure for humans and pets.
